En un sueño, Shankar viaja al Paraíso del Oeste, la Tierra Pura del Buda Amitabha, la Luz Infinita del cosmos. En el mismo sueño, acompañado por dos Bodhisattvas, aquellos seres iluminados y compasivos que, para ayudar a la humanidad, han postegado su partida al Nirvana, nuestro protagonista vuelve atrás en el Tiempo más de mil años, para conocer al Buda histórico, el príncipe Siddharta Gautama...

In a dream, Shankar journeys to the Western Paradise, the Pure Land of Buddha Amitabha, the Infinite Light of the cosmos. In the same dream, escorted by two Bodhisattvas, the enlightened and compassionate saints who have postponed the bliss of Nirvana in order to assist humanity, our hero goes back more than a thousand years in Time, to meet the historical Buddha, prince Siddartha Gautama...

Éstas son algunas de las imágenes que me acompañan siempre: Shiva en la cumbre del monte Kailasa. Agni de las dos cabezas, la deidad védica del fuego ritual... y Krishna, pastor y flautista, y, como Govinda, sostén y protector ddel universo, alma e inspiración del Mahabharata, el más grande poema épico jamás escrito; Krishna, cuyas palabras a Arjuna antes de la fatal batalla de Kurukshetra, y que el Bhagavat Gita preservará mientras exista la humanidad, cura y consuela. Jai Guru Dev.
These are some of the images which will always stand with me: Shiva on Mount Kailasa; two-headed Agni, Vedic god of the ritual fire... and Krishna, shepherd and flute-player, and, as Govinda, pillar and protector of the universe, soul and inspiration of the Mahabharata, the greatest epic poem ever written; Krishna, whose words to Arjuna before the fatal battle of Kurukshetra the Bhagavat Gita will preserve as long as mankind exists, heals and consoles. Shankar, our enigmatic pilgrim, in the India which we already portrayed in "Rakshassas", where the British Raj and the Hindu gods live together; gods like ash-covered Shiva, the divine ascetic, his son, elephant-headed Ganesha, Krishna, protector of the universe, and Kali, the Black Mother.

Cuando pinté "Prince..." , busqué reproducir los exhuberantes y vívidos colores de la iconografía popular del arte religioso hindú, tonos saturados y abigarrados que parecen vibrar con vida propia, y nos llevan de la desvaída realidad a la dimensión multicolor de los mitos.

When I painted "Prince...", I sought to reproduce the exhuberant, vivid colours of the popular iconography of Hindu religious art, saturated, rich hues which vibrate with a life of their own, and which remove us from drab reality to a the rainbow dimension of myths.

Basado en la excelente novelización del poema épico que realizara Banker, "Prince..." sería el primero de seis libros.

Some pages of "Prince of Ayodhya", the first volume of a comics adaptation of the Ramayana, written by Indian author Ashok Banker, and published by Penguin India for the Indian market. Based on the excellent novelization of the epic poem made by Banker, "Prince..." is the first of six books.
