Shankar en París... Y las grandes sombras tutelares de Hugo, Dumas, Lautrec presiden la fantasmagoría. Los Jorobados ( sí, en nuestra historia son muchos, oteando la distancia entre las igualmente vigilantes gárgolas) de los campanarios, el Hombre que Ríe ( que inmediatamente remite a Conrad Veidt en el inolvidable filme, que inevitablemente remite a uno de los más logrados villanos del cómic), Madame Guillotine recorriendo adusta los grises callejones, Cyrano, el subterráneo Fantasma organista, las catacumbas, el Hombre de la Máscara de Hierro, y los duelos de esgrima en los puentes sobre el Sena.
Shankar in Paris... And the great tutelary shades of Hugo, Dumas, Lautrec, preside the phantasmagoria. The Hunchbacked Bellmen ( yes, in our story there is more tnan one, looking upon the city down below among the equally vigilant gargoyles); the Man who Laughs ( who immediately conjures Conrad Veidt´s grimace in the unforgettable film, and inevitably brings to mind one of the greatest comic-book villains ever); Madame Guillotine stalking the grey alleys; Cyrano, the subterranean and organ-playing Phantom, the catacombs, the Man in the Iron Mask, and the sword duels on the bridges over the Seine.

Faerie / El Reino de las Hadas (3)

En inglés, "Faerie" es el mundo mágico y crepuscular de las hadas y duendes. Shankar y sus amigos cruzan más de una vez la sutil, esquiva frontera qe separa nuestro mundo del reino encantado. El agente secreto Morsa, en un teatro de San Petersburgo (llamado "Silencio" en homenaje a la sala homónima que aparece en "Mulholland Drive", de David Lynch) encuentra a la troupe viajera del muy británico Mr. Punch, personaje ambiguo - y siniestro- si los hay, reliquia de un pasado inquietante, el Bufón que era rey por un día en tiempos paganos. Solsticios, rituales, sacrificios, druidas travestidos, o envueltos en la piel desollada de las víctimas, duendes nocturnos, como el monstruoso Nuckelavee...
Shankar and his friends cross more than once the subtle, shady boundary line which separates our world from the magical, twilight realm of the faeries. Secret Agent Walrus, in a St Petersburg theatre ( called "Silence", after its namesake in David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive") meets the traveling company of a very British Mr Punch, the ambiguous and sinister clown, relic from a darker age, when he was the Fool, King for a Day. Solstice ceremonies, human sacrifices, transvestite druids, or wrapped in the flayed skin of ritual victims, night sprites, like the monstruous Nuckelavee...

Éstas son algunas de las imágenes que me acompañan siempre: Shiva en la cumbre del monte Kailasa. Agni de las dos cabezas, la deidad védica del fuego ritual... y Krishna, pastor y flautista, y, como Govinda, sostén y protector ddel universo, alma e inspiración del Mahabharata, el más grande poema épico jamás escrito; Krishna, cuyas palabras a Arjuna antes de la fatal batalla de Kurukshetra, y que el Bhagavat Gita preservará mientras exista la humanidad, cura y consuela. These are some of the images which will always stand with me: Shiva on Mount Kailasa; two-headed Agni, Vedic god of the ritual fire... and Krishna, shepherd and flute-player, and, as Govinda, pillar and protector of the universe, soul and inspiration of the Mahabharata, the greatest epic poem ever written; Krishna, whose words to Arjuna before the fatal battle of Kurukshetra the Bhagavat Gita will preserve as long as mankind exists, heals and consoles. Shankar, our enigmatic pilgrim, in the India which we already portrayed in "Rakshassas", where the British Raj and the Hindu gods live together; gods like ash-covered Shiva, the divine ascetic, his son, elephant-headed Ganesha, Krishna, protector of the universe, and Kali, the Black Mother.
