El mundo de nuestra historia se halla poblado no sólo por hombres, como no podía ser de otro modo. Echamos mano a la imaginería medieval y renacentista, y desperdigamos bellos fenómenos y monstruos por el pasiaje. Dos fuentes inapreciables para la iconografía fueron el "Libro de las Maravillas" que relata los viajes de Marco Polo, y la Weltchronik de Schedel.


Not only men people the world of our tale, which comes as no surpise, given our penchant for the marvelous. We plundered the imagery of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and came up with a host of beautiful freaks and monsters, which we scattered all over the landscape. Two precious sources were the "Book of Marvels" which narrates the travels of Marco Polo, and the Weltchronik of Schedel.

A raíz de unos mails intercambiados con el amigo Miguel Dao sobre la figura del misterioso John Dee, adivino, ocultista y consejero de Isabel I de Inglaterra, se me ocurrió mostrar algunas imágenes de dos series realizadas con Eduardo Mazzitelli hace algunos años cuya ambientación y temática, en cierto modo, recuerdan la de la época isabelina y su fascinación con la filosofía hermética. Alquimia y esoterismo mezclados con elementos del folletín de capa y espada al mejor estilo de Dumas y Sabatini, en un mundo donde las doce casas zodiacales complotan y batallan para imponerse sobre las otras. La primera serie fue "La Sangre del Escorpión", y la segunda, que retoma situaciones y personajes, "La Era de las Sombras". Una gran inspiración fue la iconografía alquímica y hermética a la hora de definir el "look" de esta obra. Aquí van, pues, dedicadas a don Dao.



We had been discussing with my friend Miguel Dao, via mail, the life of the mysterious John Dee, seer, occultist and counsellor to Elizabeth I of England. It brought to mind two series we did with Eduardo Mazzitelli some years ago; the setting and concepts owe much to the Elizabethan age and its fascination with Hermetic philosophy. Alchemy and esoterism mixed with elements from the "cloak and dagger" school as represented by Dumas and Sabatini. A world in which the twelve zodiacal houses plot and battle against each other . The first series was "Blood of Scorpio" and the second, its sequel, "The Age of Shadows". Alchemic and Hermetic iconography was a great inspiration when trying to define the look of this story. The post is dedicated to master Dao.

Bestiario / Bestiary : Felipe Mendoza (Lippe)

Conocí a Lippe en su hermosa Salta natal hace ya varios años. Silenciosa, diligentemente, ha ido desarollando una admirable carrera como historietista, ilustrador y animador, así como la de docente, formando a nuevas generaciones de artistas salteños. Está interesado en lo fantástico, pero con un notable, particularísimo plus: el folklore del norte argentino figura prominentemente en su obra, lo que la hace distintiva y única. Las dos ilustraciones que engalanan este post lo demuestran: la espectral mulánima y el misterioso Coquena, mágicos habitantes de esa tierra mágica. ¡Gracias, Lippe!

I first met Lippe several years ago in his native and beautiful Salta ( for those who may be reading this, and are not familiar with Argentina´s geography, Salta is one of our northern provinces, close to the Bolivian borderline). Silently, steadily, he has been developing an interesting body of work both in comics and animation, together with his teaching new generations of "Salteño" artists the craft of drawing. A devoted practitioner of the fantasty genre, he pays special attention to the enchanting folklore of Northern Argentina. The two illustrations which embellish this post showcase two of the magical creatures which haunt that magical land: the distrurbing "Mulánima" ( or ghostly mule) and the mysterious dwarf Coquena.

Uno de aquellos experimentos estéticos que me seducen: ¿es posible conjugar el diseño geométrico, el gusto por el efecto decorativo en el trazo y las formas, con la representación de lo grotesco? Pregunta retórica si las hay, porque alguien ya lo hizo, y magistralemente: el irlandés Harry Clarke, vitralista e ilustrador. En este post y los siguientes, imágenes que, en otra clave, buscan en esa misma dirección. Se trata de una historia breve, autoconclusiva, que hicimos con Eduardo hace más de una década, formato que me interesa por prestarse al juego gráfico y estilístico, que cambia de relato a relato. Una serie, por lo general, requiere mayor unidad estética.

An aesthetic experiment which captivates me is the following: is it possible to blend geometrical design, the decorative effect in line and shape, with the representation of the grotesque? Actually, the query is rethorical, because some artists have already accomplished that fusion: among them, Harry Clarke, the Irish stained-glass master craftsman and illustrator. In this post and subsequent ones, some images which , in a different key from Clarke's, seek to achieve that blending. They belong to a short tale we did with Eduardo more than a decade ago; a format which lends itself to stylistic and graphic play, which changes from story to story ( a serial approach, on the other hand, usually benefits from a stricter aesthetic unity).

Las tejas rojas y verdes, los ornamentos dorados como llamas estilizadas, de los techos del palacio de Bangkok. Las estatuas guardianas del Wat Po, milagrosamente animadas, escuchando más o menos furtivamente la conversación en el patio real. Y la ominosa presencia, en las sombras de las ruinas, del legendario Rey Leproso de Angkor.

The roofs of the palace in Bangkok, with their red and green tiles, and their golden ornaments, like stylized flames. The guardian statues of Wat Po, miraculously come to life, eavesdropping on a conversation in the royal courtyard. And the ominous presence, in the shadows among the ruins, of the legendary Leper King of Angkor.

More pages from "Yanayag"; as we had done in "Nightmares" and "Liquid Steel", we went on to map lost worlds, "beyond the fields we know", to quote Lord Dunsany. The ghosts of Dunsany, Ashton Smith and the early Lovecraft haunt these tales.

Crepúsculo londinense / London Twilight (Coda)

Antes de dejar las riberas del Támesis, Shankar conoce no sólo al desafortunado doctor Jekyll y a su tremebundo alter ego (el albacea del científico, que aparece por ahí, guarda un extraordinario parecido con R. L. Stevenson). También visita al famoso Hombre Elefante, que en nuestra historia no es el pobre fenómeno Joseph Merrick, sino un híbrido fugitivo de la isla del doctor Moreau, aquel científico del que escribió H. G. Wells. El Hombre Elefante guarda en su mansión diversos especímenes embalsamdos; se me ocurrió que parte de su colección estaba constituida por criaturas fantásticas de nuestra tierra, "The River Plate Menagerie".

Before leaving the banks of the Thames, Shankar not only meets the unfortunate Dr Jekyll and his sinister alter ego (the scientist's solicitor, by the way, bears an extraordinary resemblance to E. L. Stevenson). He also visits the renowned Elephant Man; in our story, he isn' t the poor freak Joseph Merrick, but a beast-man who had escaped from Dr Moreau's island, where infamous experiments on animals were performed, according to H. G. Wells. The Elephant Man keeps in his mansion many stuffed specimens; on a whim, I decided that part of his collection would be made up of the fantastic creatures of our folklore, "The River Plate Menagerie".
