Dr Strange

Este post no pretende ser otra cosa que un homenaje no sólo a Steve Ditko y Stan Lee, sino también a Marie Severin y Dan Adkins. El Dr. Strange es uno de esos personajes que llegaron a mí hace mucho, mucho tiempo, y se quedaron para siempre.
This post does not aspire to be anything but a homage not only to Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, but also to Marie Severin and Dan Adkins. The good doctor is one of those characters that came to me many, many years ago and have never left.

El siglo XVIII es mi siglo favorito. Su cultura, su música, sus modas; la pintura de Hogarth y Watteau; sus autores, desde el Dr Johnson a Voltaire, Swift, Fielding, Sterne y Pope. Por supuesto, en estas historias no buscamos reflejar la realidad histórica, sino una alternativa, con circos que, en lugar de tigres y leones, tienen grifos y mantícoras, con autómatas, con inquietantes personajes enmascarados basados en la Commedia dell´arte (el protagonista, por ejemplo, viste un disfraz de arlequín basado en el que Benois diseñara para el gran bailarín Nijinsky). Justo es nombrar, también, a dos filmes cuya estética marcaron mucho el estilo de mi dibujo en esta obra, "Casanova" de Fellini y "Barry Lyndon" de Kubrick.
The XVIII century is my favourite historical period. Its culture, its music, its fashion; the paintings of Hogarth and Watteau; great authors as Dr. Johnson, Voltaire, Swift, Fielding, Sterne and Pope. As can be expected, in these stories we did not seek to portray actual history, but an alternative, quaint reality in which circuses do not host tigers and lions, but gryphons and manticores, automaton dictators plan world conquest, and shadowy masked adventurers (based on the characters of the Commedia dell´arte) lead hazardous lives, to put it mildly. The protagonist dons an arlequin' s costume based on the one Benois designed for the legendary dancer Nijinsky. Two films also played a major influential role in the stylistic approach I chose for this saga, Fellini's "Casanova" and Kubrick' s "Barry Lyndon".
